A morning filled with laughter, imagination, and the joy of reading recently took place at Crossroads Elementary and Bel-Aire Elementary, as community leader R. Lee Flowers brought stories to life for local students in celebration of Dr. Seuss Month.
Reading beloved classics “Mr. Bow Tie” and “Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?”, Flowers captivated young audiences and helped spark excitement around reading at an early age. Adding to the fun, Sunny the Smiling G, mascot for Goodwill of South Mississippi made a special appearance, bringing energy, smiles, and a memorable experience for students.
This event is part of Goodwill’s newly launched Goodwill Reads Program, an initiative focused on promoting childhood literacy across the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Through engaging read-aloud sessions, community involvement, and access to books, the program aims to inspire a lifelong love of reading while supporting educational development.
In partnership with United Way of South Mississippi, Goodwill Reads is expanding its reach and impact, ensuring more children have access to books and positive learning experiences. As part of the celebration, every student in attendance received their very own Dr. Seuss book complete with their name inside, giving them a personal connection to reading they can carry home.
“Seeing the excitement on the students’ faces as they follow along with the stories and take home a book of their own is what this program is all about,” said Jennifer Crawford, Goodwill Reads Program Manager. “We want every child to feel confident and inspired through reading. It’s shaping the path to their future.”
The Goodwill Reads Program reflects Goodwill’s broader mission of changing lives through education, training, and employment, starting with the youngest members of the community.
