Goodwill South Mississippi Launches “GoodReads” ChildhoodLiteracy Program with First School Readings

Updated: Jan 29

Biloxi, MS — Goodwill of South Mississippi proudly launched their new childhood literacy program, GoodReads this week, with its very first reading events at Bel-Aire Elementary School and Crossroads Elementary Schools in Gulfport.

The inaugural readings were led by Harrison County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Matt Haley, alongside Goodwill’s beloved mascot, Sunny the Smiling G, bringing stories, smiles, and excitement to local elementary students. Each child who participated received a book of their own to take home, helping spark a love for reading beyond the classroom.

GoodReads is Goodwill of South Mississippi’s newest mission-focused program designed to promote early literacy, encourage community involvement, and support children across the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The program is made possible through a valued partnership with United Way of South Mississippi.

“Seeing the kids’ excitement truly showed us the impact this program can have,” said Vicki Burton, CEO/President of Goodwill South Mississippi “GoodReads is about more than books. It’s about community, confidence, and creating positive moments that can shape a child’s future.”

Goodwill of South Mississippi plans to expand the GoodReads program with additional reading events throughout the community and is currently seeking volunteers. Those interested in volunteering may contact Goodwill of South Mississippi at 228.863.2323 or missionservices@goodwillsms.org
